<obligatory Assange post>

So I haven’t really wanted to step into the fray regarding the Wikileaks/Assange/Rape feminist horror-show because, well, Sady Doyle is doing the hard fight for us all.  And being attacked for it by supposedly progressive forces, which, come on, is too surreal to even consider because it, what, makes your brain fucking fall out.

But!  I did just have a thought in my obviously tiny, lady-ish mind and my first impulse, of course, against my better judgment was to put it out on my stupid Tumblr.  Fuel to the fire?  Fuck it — I’ve got an extinguisher handy.

Obviously, this being the internet and all, we all have insanely short memories.  Lightning-fast news cycle, etc.  Dare I even mention the last time we were all whipped into a frenzy when pretty well-known bloggers mentioned the R-word?  It was in 2008, so I’ll forgive you the lacunae in your memory bank.  Remember when Jezebel’s Moe and Tracie were interviewed by Liz Winstead and Moe admitted to not reporting her rape because she had, well, better things to do, like “drink more”?  Just Google Jezebel + Liz Winstead.  There’s enough to read at your leisure.  Now eyes back here.

The firestorm was quite something to observe.  And by quite something, I mean, fucked up and crazy as most things tend to be on the internet where half-assed opinions and trolls and ill-informed shit-heads can really ruin your life.  Moe left Jezebel not long after this.  Slate, Winstead, Huff Po, among countless, “heartbroken” teenaged girl-bloggers addressed the interview with a mixture of grim head-shaking and holier-than-thou pearl-clutching.  Why?  Because Moe said she did not report her rape.  I’ll repeat that for the nose-bleeds: SHE DID NOT REPORT HER RAPE.

What an outrage!  Who do you THINK you are?!  NOT REPORTING it?  Are you crazy?  What kind of fucking example do you think you’re setting here?

And now?  Now, supposed left-wing pundits are pissed because these two Swedish women have actually gone to the police to report it?  They’ve actually come out against a rather powerful dick-swinger and now are being shamed.  Their charges are being minimized and they’re being made to look like hysterics.

“Come on, the condom broke.  Happened to us all, no?  He shouldn’t be in jail for a product malfunction.”
“Surprise Sex sounds kinda hottt.”
“Trumped up charges of just bad sex.  If someone arrested me every time I gave a lady a crappy lay, I’d be in Rikers until 2150.”

These kind of conflicting, hypocritical reactions to RAPE basically mean the woman is fucked if she does or if she doesn’t.  As it were.  This is very telling of our supposedly progressive society’s ideas of rape.  We’re not cool with it at all if it’s perpetuated in the Congo where the women basically have no defense or method of punishing their attackers, nosireebob.  But if it’s done to a white lady somewhere “nice,” the victim has pretty much no out.  Yes, No, you’re an attention-seeking whore, you’re a terrible example, you’re hardly human.

There is no script here.  The only rule of thumb?  Take every individual victim’s opinion and case seriously.  You owe her that, assholes.

“They are solidifying; they are gaining on us.”

This is GOOD → theawl.com

Yeah it is.  Wish I had the music knowledge to feel brilliantly a-thrum with titillation, but still.  Definitely worth the read.  BRILLIANT.
